The Cook’s Corner: A taste of Ireland at home with classic Irish soda bread

Fresh from the oven just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, this traditional Irish soda bread features a golden crust and tender crumb — a simple, rustic loaf made for sharing. 

 

As St. Patrick’s Day approaches, kitchens everywhere start filling with some of Ireland’s most comforting foods—hearty stews, buttery potatoes and warm breads fresh from the oven. One of the simplest and most beloved Irish staples is traditional Irish soda bread, a rustic loaf that has been baked in Irish homes for generations.

Unlike most breads, soda bread doesn’t require yeast or long rising times. Instead, it uses baking soda as its leavening agent, which is where the bread gets its name. The result is a slightly dense, tender loaf with a crisp crust that comes together in less than an hour—perfect for a cozy weeknight meal or a festive St. Patrick’s Day gathering.

There’s also a charming Irish tradition tied to soda bread that families still practice today. Before baking, many cooks cut a small cross into the top of the dough. Practically speaking, it helps the bread cook evenly, but tradition says the cross was meant to “let the fairies out” and bless the bread and home. It’s a simple little ritual that makes baking the bread feel even more special—especially if you let the kids help score the top before it goes into the oven.

Irish soda bread pairs beautifully with many traditional Irish dishes. Serve it alongside a hearty beef stew, a bowl of potato leek soup, or even classic corned beef and cabbage for a complete St. Patrick’s Day meal. The bread is just as good toasted the next morning with butter and a little jam.

And if you’d rather celebrate St. Patrick’s Day out on the town instead of in the kitchen, Spartanburg has the perfect spot. Delaney’s Irish Kitchen & Pub, located in Morgan Square, has been serving the community since 2003 and has become something of a downtown landmark. Known for its warm atmosphere, live music and classic pub fare, Delaney’s brings a little Irish charm to the heart of Spartanburg year-round.

This year, Delaney’s will host “Shenanigans on the Square” on Saturday, March 14, a lively St. Patrick’s celebration featuring live music throughout the day on the Ellis Law Stage. Performances include Jason & Leah Davis at noon, The High Tides at 3 p.m., Borderline Therapy at 6 p.m., and Venus Kings inside the pub at 9 p.m. The event is free to attend and will also feature local vendors, food, drinks and a kids zone.

While you’re there, you can sample several traditional Irish-inspired dishes from their menu. Favorites include Corned Beef & Cabbage, slow-cooked brisket served with baby potatoes and seasoned cabbage, as well as Bangers & Mash, Irish sausage served over creamy mashed potatoes with Guinness gravy. Another standout is the Beef Limerick, marinated beef topped with grilled mushrooms and Guinness gravy.

Whether you’re baking at home or celebrating downtown, St. Patrick’s Day is a great excuse to gather around the table and enjoy good food with family and friends.

Classic Irish Soda Bread

Ingredients
 • 4 cups all-purpose flour
 • 1 teaspoon baking soda
 • 1 teaspoon salt
 • 1 ¾ cups buttermilk
 • Optional: 2 tablespoons sugar or ½ cup raisins for a slightly sweeter loaf.

Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 425°F and lightly grease a baking sheet or cast-iron skillet.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda and salt.
3. Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk. Stir until a soft dough forms.
4. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently shape it into a round loaf.
5. Place on the baking sheet and cut a deep cross across the top of the dough.
6. Bake for 30–35 minutes until golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
7. Let cool slightly before slicing and serving with butter.
