You may know him as The Bread Guy. We know him as Nick Dhers — a culinary master bringing the best of European baking techniques to the heart of Spartanburg.

A native of France, Dhers first moved to the states at the age of 12, and spent his teenage years in the Spartanburg public school system. However, after high school, he found himself heading back to France to chase a dream.

“I always had fond memories of growing up in France and going to the bakeries there,” Dhers shares. “It was a part of my daily life, and it was something I really missed after I moved.”

So after doing culinary school in the States, Dhers journeyed to France to learn how to bake from the best in the world. He spent two years in baking, and another two years in pastries and desserts.

After baking school, Dhers came back to America, accepting his first post-grad job at a bakery in Key West, Florida. For over a decade, Dhers would call the state home — he spent around a year in Key West before moving to Miami for 11 years, and even opened a bakery in Fort Lauderdale.

After getting married, he moved back to South Carolina in 2016, marking his first real return to life in the Upstate since high school. Dhers opened five restaurants in the area, only to have four shut down during COVID.

Then, in 2021, he opened The Bread Guy.

The Bread Guy started out small, a side gig born out of Dhers’s love for baking. He attended local farmer’s markets and small events, sharing his breads and pastries with the community.

It was love at first taste. His baked goods continued to grow in popularity, and in 2024, he opened a physical location in Boiling Springs.

Now, locals will tell you that there’s only one place around to get true, authentic French bread and pastries: The Bread Guy. Dhers has a committed base of regular customers, but if you think you’ve never tasted his work, think again — he also runs a large wholesale business, providing bread to some of downtown Spartanburg’s finest restaurants, and pastries to local coffee shops and breweries.

The Bread Guy has grown to a team of seven, and shows no sign of slowing down. And if you’ve never stopped by for yourself? Fan favorites from the menu include the Gucci Roll, which is similar to a cinnamon roll, along with the almond croissant. The bakery also makes phenomenal fresh pizza.

Despite having traveled across the globe baking and investing in the restaurant world, Dhers says that the Spartanburg community is unique. “Hospitality is really a thing down here,” he says, “and my customers are really cool people. I don’t even know how to explain it. It’s just special.”

You can find The Bread Guy at 4019B Parris Bridge Road in Boiling Springs. Contact them by phone at 864-631-3926 or email at TheBreadGuy83@gmail.com.
