Winter markets bring Spartanburg back together after stormy week

February 4, 2026

After several days of winter weather, icy roads and event cancellations, Spartanburg is ready to reemerge — and two local markets are helping the community do just that. On Saturday, Feb. 7, the Hub City Farmers Market and the Fretwell Market will both host winter markets, inviting residents to shop local, reconnect and support small businesses after a challenging week.

The Hub City Farmers Market will return from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Rockers Brewing Co., following the cancellation of its January market due to an ice storm. The winter market is part of the organization’s year-round effort to provide farmers, bakers and local makers with consistent income beyond the traditional outdoor season. Shoppers can expect a variety of locally produced foods, packaged goods and handmade items, along with continued access to SNAP/EBT benefits and nutrition assistance resources.

Nearby, the Fretwell Market will also take place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the lawn at Fretwell, located just steps from the Mary Black Foundation Rail Trail. Held the first Saturday of every month throughout the year, the market has become known as a relaxed, family- and pet-friendly gathering space. Featuring local makers, bakers and small farms, the outdoor market encourages visitors to walk, bike or drive in and enjoy the morning together. Pets are welcome, making it a favorite stop for animal lovers as well as shoppers.

Winter markets play an essential role in sustaining local businesses, especially during colder months when foot traffic is typically lower and weather disruptions are more common. For farmers and vendors, these markets provide reliable opportunities to sell products, connect with customers and plan ahead for future seasons. For the community, they offer continued access to fresh, locally produced food and goods while keeping shopping dollars circulating close to home.

After several days spent indoors and a number of weather-related closures, Saturday’s markets offer a chance to ease back into community life. Organizers from both markets say attendance during winter months makes a meaningful difference for vendors who rely on year-round support.

As Spartanburg thaws, these winter markets serve as a reminder that supporting local businesses matters in every season. Showing up, even on a chilly morning, helps strengthen the local economy and keeps the community & its traditions thriving year-round.
