Tim Bryant
A local author with deep ties to the Spartanburg area has released his third novel, a work that explores themes of faith, capitalism, tolerance and redemption through the lens of contemporary Southern culture.
Tim Bryant, a Jonesville resident and former partner in a Spartanburg advertising agency, recently published The Stained Glass Mustang through Unsolicited Press. The novel follows a disgraced advertising executive whose efforts to rebuild his life after a drunk driving incident lead him into a conflict involving art, religion and commercial exploitation.
The story centers on John Williams, a former advertising professional who loses his career and reputation after a drunken driving crash. Living aboard a sailboat and struggling to maintain his last remaining client, Williams receives an unexpected inheritance: a vintage Mustang covered in colorful artwork depicting scenes from the life of Christ.
The unusual vehicle quickly becomes the focus of competing interests. While Williams' client sees the car as a marketing opportunity, a single mother believes the artwork may have been created by a legendary Mexican street artist and argues that using it for profit would be disrespectful. As the conflict unfolds, Williams is forced to confront questions about faith, morality and personal redemption.
Bryant blends elements of Southern Gothic storytelling and magical realism to examine how belief is shaped and interpreted in modern society. The novel explores the tension between commerce and spirituality while following a protagonist seeking a second chance.
The book marks Bryant's third published novel. His previous works include Blue Rubber Pool, which is set in Jonesville and along the South Carolina coast, and The Bird in Your Heart: A Carolina Sea Island Story, set on Edisto Island.
Before turning his focus to fiction, Bryant built a career in advertising as a partner in The Creative Edge, a Spartanburg-based agency that earned national recognition for its work. His experiences in marketing, combined with his roots in the Upstate, have helped shape many of the themes found in his writing.
Now living in Jonesville, Bryant continues to draw inspiration from the landscapes, culture and complexities of the South. His latest novel reflects those influences while examining timeless questions about forgiveness, identity and the search for meaning.
The Stained Glass Mustang is available through major booksellers and online retailers.
