The Zeplin brings speakeasy charm and craft cocktails beneath the Montgomery Building

February 25, 2026

There’s something about walking down a set of stairs into a dimly lit room that immediately feels like you’ve discovered a secret. That’s exactly the effect The Zeplin delivers.

Tucked beneath the historic Montgomery Building in downtown Spartanburg, The Zeplin is the city’s newest speakeasy-style cocktail lounge and gastropub. From the moment you approach the entrance- marked by a bold, art deco-inspired mural outside- it feels intentional, cinematic and just a little bit hidden.

Inside, the space is compact but thoughtfully designed. Exposed brick floors, concrete columns and oversized industrial wall features nod to the building’s past, while warm lighting and intimate seating create an inviting atmosphere. On a recent visit, there was a steady buzz in the room. Barstools were full, small tables were occupied and there were plenty of familiar faces- a sure sign that word has spread quickly.

Despite the crowd, the energy never felt chaotic. Instead, it was lively but relaxed- the kind of place where you can linger over a drink and actually hear the person across from you.

I sampled two of the featured cocktails: “Through the Green Door,” a bourbon-based drink with cacao, alpine herbs and matcha, and “Elvis Has Left the Building,” a bright blend of white rum, tart cherry and blood orange. Both were layered and balanced, but approachable. The presentation stood out just as much as the flavors. Cocktails are served in delicate, vintage-style glasses that add to the speakeasy aesthetic and make the experience feel special from the first sip.

Another favorite: the boiled peanuts.  A small plate that feels distinctly Southern- warm, salty and just spicy enough to keep you reaching back into the bowl. They paired surprisingly well with the craft cocktails and felt like a thoughtful nod to regional flavor.

Service was another highlight. Our waitress was personable, attentive and clearly knowledgeable about the menu, offering recommendations without hovering. That same warmth was echoed by another recent local guest. She and her husband stopped in for drinks after dinner on Valentine’s Day.

“We ordered drinks at the bar and then sat in two comfy chairs with a little side table between them,” she said. “It was a nice relaxing energy, perfect for winding down after dinner. The staff were all very friendly and knowledgeable.”

She also shared a piece of local lore passed along during their visit. When Elvis Presley played the old Carolina Theater in 1956, he reportedly used an exposed door now visible inside the bar as his exit. “Pretty cool for little old Spartanburg,” she said.

Though the footprint is small, The Zeplin feels intentional rather than cramped. The combination of creative cocktails, approachable small plates and a distinctive atmosphere gives it a strong sense of place.

As downtown Spartanburg continues to grow, The Zeplin adds a new dimension to the city’s nightlife- intimate, stylish and just hidden enough to feel like a discovery worth sharing.
