Downtown Spartanburg is set to gain a new hotel as part of a major redevelopment effort led by The Johnson Group.
The Morgan Hotel, a planned 152-room property, was unveiled Aug. 11 as part of Project CORE, the Johnson Group's approximately $800 million redevelopment initiative in downtown Spartanburg. The hotel will be located on West Main Street overlooking Morgan Square.
The six-story hotel will be part of Hilton's Curio Collection and is planned to include ground-floor dining, a rooftop bar and a 6,000-square-foot ballroom. The hotel and the Milliken Club at nearby Fifth Third Park will add more than 10,000 square feet of event space to downtown Spartanburg, according to developers.
The Morgan Hotel is designed to serve as a connection between downtown Spartanburg, Morgan Square and Fifth Third Park. Developers say the first floor will provide space intended to connect the surrounding areas and encourage activity between the hotel, downtown businesses and the ballpark.
The hotel is one part of the larger Project CORE development, which includes new office, residential and commercial space in the downtown area.
Other projects within the development include a 150,000-square-foot Class A office building at 245 W. Main St., a mixed-use development at 185 W. Main St. with approximately 97,000 square feet of office and commercial space, and an 181-unit multifamily residential project along Broad Street.
American Credit Acceptance, a Spartanburg-based company, is expected to occupy 200,000 square feet of new Class A office space within the broader development, according to developers.
The completed projects are projected to bring nearly 1,000 additional daytime office workers, approximately 300 new residents and an estimated 40,000 hotel guests to downtown Spartanburg each year.
The Morgan Hotel is expected to open within the next several years as construction and the remaining phases of Project CORE move forward.
The project adds another major hospitality development to a downtown Spartanburg area that has seen significant investment in recent years, including the opening of Fifth Third Park and continued growth in restaurants, retail, office and residential development.
