When you’re planning a weekend getaway from Spartanburg, Charleston is usually one of the first destinations that comes to mind. But instead of booking another chain hotel or expensive downtown stay, we decided to try something completely different over Fourth of July weekend- and it ended up being one of our favorite parts of the trip.

The Starlight Motor Inn in North Charleston is exactly what happens when a classic roadside motel gets a thoughtful second chance. Originally opened in 1961, the independently owned property has been lovingly restored into a colorful, mid-century boutique motel that somehow feels nostalgic and brand new at the same time. The original character remains, but every detail has been reimagined with modern travelers in mind.

From the moment we pulled in, it felt different. Palm trees, vintage-inspired signage, cheerful colors and a beautifully restored pool immediately set the tone. Inside, our room was spotless, bright and thoughtfully designed with comfortable beds, modern amenities and fun retro touches that made it feel more like a boutique hotel than a former motor inn.

Traveling with kids can sometimes make boutique hotels feel off limits, but not here. Our family felt completely at home. The staff couldn’t have been friendlier, always greeting us with a smile and making us feel genuinely welcome throughout our stay. The pool quickly became our children’s favorite spot, while we appreciated how relaxed and laid-back the atmosphere felt.

One thing that really surprised us was the location. North Charleston gave us easy access to just about everything we wanted to do. On the morning of the Fourth of July, we drove about 30 minutes to Folly Beach, spent several hours by the ocean, and still had plenty of time to return for the Starlight’s festive Fourth of July pool party that afternoon. It made for the perfect holiday without ever feeling rushed.

One of our favorite discoveries was Harlow & Pearl, the charming coffee shop just steps from the lobby. Every morning started there, and after one sip, we understood why locals stop in even if they aren’t staying overnight. Their signature Banana Pudding Latte was hands-down one of the best specialty coffees I’ve ever had- rich, smooth and somehow tasting exactly like homemade banana pudding without being overly sweet. Our kids were equally impressed with the beautifully crafted chocolate milks, each topped with whipped cream and sprinkles with an adorable tiny toy duck on the side that quickly became the highlight of breakfast.

The poolside experience didn’t disappoint either. The Pool House serves handcrafted cocktails just steps from the water, and their house-made piña colada quickly became my vacation favorite. Unlike the overly sweet frozen versions you often find at beach destinations, this one was fresh, balanced and incredibly refreshing- the kind of drink you order once and immediately know you’ll be back for another. Between the pool, great music, beachy atmosphere and friendly staff, it was easy to spend an entire afternoon without wanting to leave.

Another unexpected highlight sits just upstairs.

The Burgundy Lounge has been a local favorite since 1966 and is now one of North Charleston’s most popular gathering spots. Open Wednesday through Saturday, the lounge serves classic cocktails, hosts live music, karaoke nights, DJs and themed events that attract both locals and visitors. Even if you’re not staying overnight, it’s worth adding to your Charleston itinerary.

The Starlight has mastered something that’s surprisingly difficult: creating a place that’s undeniably Instagram-worthy without feeling like it’s trying too hard. Every corner is photogenic, but nothing feels staged. It has personality, warmth and just enough quirky charm to make you smile.

For our family, it checked every box- clean, affordable, welcoming, convenient and genuinely fun. It’s proof that sometimes the most memorable places aren’t the luxury resorts or big-name hotels, but the ones with a story to tell.
