Mahjong is officially having a moment in Spartanburg — and if your feed has suddenly been filled with colorful tiles, cocktails, chic game mats and groups of people gathered around tables laughing for hours, you are not imagining things. The centuries-old game has made a major comeback across the country, especially among younger players looking for screen-free ways to connect socially. Nationally, Eventbrite reported a huge increase in mahjong events between 2023 and 2024, while Yelp searches for mahjong clubs and lessons have skyrocketed in recent years.
Originally created in China during the 1800s, mahjong is a four-player tile game built around strategy, skill and a little bit of luck. Over time, different versions evolved around the world, including the American version, often called mah jongg, which became especially popular in the United States during the early 1900s. Today’s resurgence feels a little different, though. What was once stereotyped as a game for grandparents has become one of the trendiest social hobbies around, with younger generations embracing the colorful aesthetic, competitive gameplay and community aspect.
For beginners, the game can look intimidating at first glance. The tiles feature symbols, numbers and characters that players use to build specific combinations called “hands.” In American mahjong, players follow a yearly card published by the National Mah Jongg League that outlines all the winning combinations. The game involves drawing and discarding tiles while trying to complete a winning hand before the other players at the table. It is part strategy, part memory game and part social event.
And in Spartanburg, the mahjong scene is growing fast.
One of the most recognizable local groups is Burg Bam Mahj, a Spartanburg-based mahjong club created by Mandy Malarik that hosts lessons, leagues and themed events around town. Their bright, playful social media graphics and community-centered events have helped introduce many locals to the game. From beginner Mahj 101 nights to summer leagues and girls’ night events, Mandy has created a fun and welcoming environment for players of all skill levels.
For Mandy, though, mahjong is about much more than simply learning the rules of the game.
“Mahjong is more than just a game for me,” Malarik said. “I love that there are so many tile options and ways to curate your collection and express yourself. And I love that mahjong challenges your brain.”
But what stands out most to her is the sense of connection it creates.
“What I love most about mahjong is the joy and laughter that happens around the tiles,” she said. “Old friendships strengthen and new friendships form — and that’s exactly why I love teaching mahjong. We’re not just showing people how to play, we’re building a real community here in Spartanburg, and that’s so special to be a part of.”
Another Upstate account gaining attention is Sparkle City Mahjong, led by certified instructor Andrea Morris. The group offers lessons, events and beginner-friendly instruction designed to make the game feel approachable. Their page is filled with smiling students, colorful tiles and game nights happening across the area.
Mahj Made Easy has also become a popular resource for Upstate players wanting to learn the game. The account promotes lessons, guided play sessions and special events at local venues throughout the region, including wineries, boutiques and restaurants.
And speaking of restaurants, several local businesses have embraced the mahjong trend as a way to bring people together. Blue Moon Bodega regularly hosts Mahjong Mondays that combine cocktails, food and game nights into one social event. Photos from the evenings show packed tables, spritzes in hand and players fully immersed in the game.
Part of mahjong’s appeal is that it feels nostalgic and fresh at the same time. In an era where so much social interaction happens through phones and screens, mahjong offers something tactile and personal. Players gather around a table for hours talking, laughing, learning and competing. It is equal parts hobby, social club and mental workout.
Whether you are interested in learning the basics, joining a league or simply seeing what all the hype is about, Spartanburg’s growing mahjong community makes it easier than ever to grab a seat at the table.
