Summer may be winding down, but Spartanburg’s event calendar is just heating up. Whether you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime baseball experience, a nostalgic night of dancing or free live music downtown, August is packed with opportunities to get out and enjoy the community. Here are three events worth adding to your calendar.
Banana Ball comes to Fifth Third Park
One of the biggest events ever to come to Spartanburg arrives Aug. 6-8 when Banana Ball takes over Fifth Third Park, 300 W. Henry St. The nationally known Banana Ball Championship League will feature the Texas Tailgaters taking on the Indianapolis Clowns in three nights of fast-paced, fan-focused entertainment.
If you’ve never experienced Banana Ball, think of it as baseball mixed with a live show. Players dance, interact with fans, perform trick plays and keep the energy high from the first pitch until the final out. Even people who don’t normally follow baseball often leave as fans.
Because of overwhelming demand, tickets were distributed through the Savannah Bananas’ lottery system, though fans can continue checking official resale opportunities through the Banana Ball ticket marketplace. Break out the poodle skirts at Rigsby’s
If classic cars, oldies music and dancing sound more like your speed, head downtown for the Summertime Sock Hop Party at Rigsby’s Classic Rock Café, located at 397 E. Main St.
The event will take place Saturday, Aug. 15, from 7-10 p.m. and encourages guests to come dressed in their favorite 1950s- and 1960s-inspired attire. Expect plenty of classic rock and roll, dancing, themed decorations and a fun atmosphere that celebrates one of America’s most iconic eras. Whether you go all out with a poodle skirt or simply want a unique night downtown with friends, it’s shaping up to be one of the more memorable themed events of the summer.

Music on Main gets an August Encore
For the first time, Spartanburg’s popular Music on Main concert series is extending into August, giving residents four more Thursdays of free live music in Morgan Square.
Concerts will be held every Thursday in August from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in downtown Spartanburg. Admission is free, making it an easy after-work outing for families, couples and groups of friends. Bring a lawn chair or blanket, grab dinner or drinks from one of the many nearby restaurants and enjoy an evening of live entertainment in the heart of the city.
Visitors should note that outside alcohol and coolers are not permitted, and organizers ask that pets stay home. The concerts also continue a longtime tradition of supporting local nonprofit organizations, with civic groups volunteering during each event to raise funds for their causes.
