Spartanburg Young Professionals to host August networking event
Young professionals from across Spartanburg County are invited to expand their professional networks and build community connections during the next Spartanburg Young Professionals (SYP) & Social even on Monday, Aug. 10, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at The Beerded Cork Taproom on Spartanburg's east side.
The event is open to young professionals interested in meeting others from a variety of industries and organizations. Registration is available online in advance.

Spartanburg Little Theatre closes season with cult favorite 'Heathers the Musical'
The Spartanburg Little Theatre will conclude its 2025-26 season this month with a stage adaptation of the cult classic Heathers the Musical.
The production will be presented during a seven-performance run from July 17-26.
Due to mature themes, language and content, the production is rated R and is recommended for audiences ages 10 and older. Visit https://chapmanculturalcenter.org/ for ticket information.
Smithsonian Human Origins exhibit continues at Spartanburg County Library through July
Residents still have time to experience the Smithsonian Institution's traveling exhibit, "Exploring Human Origins," on display through the end of July at the Spartanburg County Public Libraries Planetarium.
The exhibit features more than 40 informational panels, interactive displays, videos and other educational materials that explore the scientific story of human evolution. Visitors can also attend a special program on July 30 as part of the exhibit's local presentation.
The exhibit is open to the public and offers an opportunity for visitors of all ages to learn about the origins and development of humankind through engaging, hands-on experiences.
Spartanburg County students graduate from Furman University
Greenville - Furman University awarded degrees to 560 graduates during its May 9 commencement ceremony at Paladin Stadium. Among the members of the Class of 2026 were several students from Spartanburg County:
Chesnee: Destiny Lynn Parker, Bachelor of Arts in communication studies and sociology, with a minor in women's, gender and sexuality studies.
Duncan: Ashley Ramos, Bachelor of Arts in business administration and Spanish.
Spartanburg: Kyler Bailey, Bachelor of Science, cum laude, in computer science; Anna Wallace Cheek, Bachelor of Science, summa cum laude, in biology and German studies; Kenny Chen, Bachelor of Science, cum laude, in biology and music, with a minor in data analytics; and Jason Simon Levitt, Bachelor of Science, summa cum laude, in public health.
Converse Professor honored for teaching excellence
Converse University Associate Professor of Hispanic Studies Dr. Stefania Licata has been recognized by the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (SCICU) with a 2026 Excellence in Teaching Award.
Licata was one of 20 faculty members honored statewide for outstanding teaching, mentorship and dedication to undergraduate education. Each recipient receives a $3,000 professional development grant.
In addition to teaching Hispanic studies, Licata founded and directs Converse's Spanish Writing and Language Center and serves as faculty advisor for the Hispanic Organization for Latinx Awareness (HOLA).
Spartanburg Comic Con returns July 25
Spartanburg Comic Con will return to the Piedmont Interstate Fairgrounds, 575 Fairgrounds Road, on Saturday, July 25.
The biannual event, the county's only comic book, toy and pop culture convention, will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature comic books, vintage collectibles, Funko Pop figures, action figures, board games and other merchandise. Admission is $5. Children ages 12 and younger are admitted free.
Music at the Market returns to Landrum
LANDRUM — The City of Landrum's free Music at the Market concert series begins Saturday, July 25, at the Cunningham Market Pavilion, 221 W. Rutherford St. The family-friendly concert will run from 7 to 9:30 p.m. and feature the Silver Travis Band. The series includes six concerts scheduled through the fall. Attendees are encouraged to bring folding chairs and enjoy dinner at one of downtown Landrum's restaurants before the show.
