The Spartan Weekly News has been a trusted voice in Spartanburg County since its founding in 1963 by Bob Dailey, Sr. Originally launched as The Sparta, the paper quickly became a vital source for community news and local happenings. As readership grew throughout the 1960s and 1970s, so did its reputation, soon becoming the leading outlet for public notices across the county. It was during this time the publication officially adopted the name The Spartan Weekly News.
In late 1998, Bob Dailey, Jr. stepped in to carry on his father’s legacy. With the support of his wife, Tammy, and a dedicated team of just four staff members, the early 2000s marked a new era of growth. Under their leadership, circulation and readership increased fivefold, revitalizing the paper and reaffirming its role in the community.
Today, The Spartan Weekly News stands proudly as Spartanburg’s only countywide weekly newspaper of general circulation. For more than 60 years, we’ve remained committed to delivering stories that matter—local events, features of interest, and essential public notices—all with the consistency and care our readers have come to expect.
We’re honored to continue serving the people of Spartanburg County, just as we have for generations.
